India Flight Infernos

When presented with the opportunity to provide an identity for my approximately 40-person office, the India Flight within the 31st Intelligence Squadron, I took the initiative to provide an avenue for the people to voice their opinions. After hosting a poll to gain a census of the ideal identity concept, the final decision came to a rest upon The Infernos, personifying the passion and fire of the people therein.

The Process

To best represent the spirit of an inferno, I chose to keep the design centered on a flame that burns outward from the middle, with rings symbolizing cohesion among the echelons that comprised the unit. The flame briefly breaks the bounds of its outer containment ring - spirited, yet tempered - with the text remaining balanced within its bracketed space.

Keeping in mind the necessity to be used in both digital and print domains, I introduced a single color to be used as an accent for the stark black and white in the design. This tricolor design provides multiple iterations of color variations throughout the sequence of practical applications. Tshirts, patches, tokens, and coins were emblazoned with the design, with further one-off uses appearing on awards and gift items given out by leadership.

Among other concepts proposed to the team, I queried concepts such as rockets, missile explosions, and fiery tornados in attempts to best convey the Inferos ethos. In the end, the straightforwardness of the fireball erupted on top as the best proponent of the identity project.
